The Clay Company
The Clay Company is both a studio and a retail space.
It is manifested materially through the juxtaposition of the three acts of making, baking and retailing. A fourth component of the space is community building.
Spatially, the interior volume was divided into four quadrants.
The first two quadrants define a double height space, while a mezzanine has been inserted to bisect the rear two quadrants. The former allows natural light to illuminate both the potters wheels and the merchandise that is on sale, the rear two quadrants provide support spaces by means of a mezzanine pantry and meeting space for community development and ideation while kilns and drying racks at the entry level support the act of making and retailing.
The colour scheme and material choices include white painted brick walls, terrazzo floors, rubber wood and plumbing pipe shelving.
